Who Dat Wolf?
My first discovery of Blackwolf was when a friend said, “Hey, there’s this Nerdcore dude from West Chester” so I looked him up. My next was when I friended him on Facebook and he sent me a link to this kickass music video:
Of course, watching this video got me hooked… so I asked is he wanted to send me something to review. He immediately sent me a copy of an album. That album, the one I am reviewing for you today, is 2010’s Bad Ju Ju.
[rating:7/10]
The first track, “Red”, is an in-your-face track. It’s a great opener and Blackwolf’s flow is solid. For many reasons, notably the powerful vocal and the ferocity of the beat, it may be the album’s best track.
The other standout track is “Merch”, a fun track in which Blackwolf explains why he’s not interested in wasting his time or money on the merch of a lame unknown artist.
Outside of these 2 tracks, the album is a bit up and down. There is tons of potential in Blackwolf’s rhymes, but Bad Ju Ju feels like an artist still finding himself. Some of the beats are generic and/or seemingly uninspired, but Blackwolf’s flow typically makes up for it.
Overall, it’s enjoyable, but definitely not as awesome as what is to come from Blackwolf. Good, not great, but the potential for greatness is there. Don’t forget to check out his latest music video before you go.
