Porn and Pinkeye
[rating:9/10]
Seth Rogen was a relative unknown that recently started getting some attention with hilarious supporting roles in 40 Year Old Virgin and You, Me, and Dupree. He was not unknown, however, to the Judd Apatow crowd and fans like myself who were just waiting for the sarcastic comic actor from Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared to finally get his starring role that would wake the rest of the world up to his utter hilariousness. Those of us who have been watching Seth Rogen for the last few years knew that with Apatow’s recent success with Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and 40 Year Old Virgin, Seth would be showcased soon. With the release of Knocked Up, Seth Rogen will start to become the household name it deserves to be.
At first, Rogen’s character is not exactly the best guy in the world, but he starts off and remains a very likeable guy. Trying to start up a porn website, playing video games, and smoking pot with his friends (including Apatow cast alumni: Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, and Martin Starr) are his favorite pastimes. After a one night stand, he finds out that he’s going to be a father. Further hilarity ensues as he struggles to let go of his easy, loser-ish life and become a responsible man.
The movie has a great underlying love story, thus giving you a good in to watch it with your wife or girlfriend. And it’s educational… I learned that farting on someone’s pillow bare-assed can give them pinkeye. Whatever excuse you need to go see this movie, just do it. Not only is Seth Rogen finally the star of a great, irreverent comedy, but the cast is brilliant and the character development is stellar. Rogen should definitely be slated to be the next it-boy of the Amercian comedy world. Look for Superbad to be the comedy smash of this summer, written and produced by Rogen… but before you go see Superbad, make sure to see his genius in Knocked Up.
